The Grand Denali

The Grand Denali

I used to hike up these cliffs to watch sunset or get away, since then, they carved up a road and put a massive hotel on it. To some an eye-sore, to others a wonder.

Oh I'd be there! :-) This place is really a feat and the main dining room has a big central fireplace and picture windows open to the mountains and park. A nice setting. The deck closes too early in the season I think though. I miss the quick escape spot of the old days, but further up the trail there are plenty more. This is the base of Mt Sugarloaf. Th eroom on the other hand are set to the side out of sight, much less impressive.

why do they clase the deck?

Starts getting cool, and they just put away the tables and chairs and lock the doors. This is abandoned for the winter. Maybe two or three people stay around to guard it.

what a pitty....nice work if you can get it...

A little too remote for me. You would spend a dark and windy cold winter of 8 months with just about 10 people. I've met people that go crazy trying something like that. Just never the same again.

8 months...nooo. maybe 8 days ...

why such an huge hotel in a spot where winter will be windy and dark and last 8 months???

This community exists only to house the flood of people that visit each summer. It sits at the mouth of the park road, 60 miles into Denali National Park and Preserve ending at Wonder Lake, the closest one can drive to the base of Mt Mckinley, highest peak in North America. This is where Ansel Adams took a famous black and white photograph of the peak. The road follows the Alaska range up to it, all in tundra with grizzly bears and moose and the caribou. This Inn has the best view peaking into the park from up there. It is very full and busy through the summer.

Thanks for the explanation GT :o)
Now, does it mean that this place is empty for 8 months and works only during summer? Or it is open as ski resort?
I'm just curious :o)

It is empty, just a few maintenance and security people around. There aren't any ski type venues here, the park is a preserve, so most of the mountains are protected from that kind of thing. The skiing is mostly south in the Chugach Mountains. I lived down there two year at that resort, Alyeska. The only ski hill that ends at sea level really beautiful. You could probably google it.
