Just out of interest, which variety have you got? We bought 'Black Lace' a few years ago and with its dark leaves and pink-white flowers (followed by usual edible red berries) it's one of the most beautiful trees. It's dead easy to propagate from either green (softwood) cuttings in the spring or ripe ones over winter.

hi bertiefox
i bought it from one of these garden open days and they only named it as sambucus nigra so i will have to wait its about 2ft tall and looks very black but a pink yew to leaves

I have one near the house and I just selectively prune it to keep it under check. The roots are not that bad and especially if you prune it, they won't get too exploratory.
Steve.
