I have a damson tree and we always seem to lose the first fruit to some kind of fungus or mould that makes them shrivel and die. We then get a crop after that.

What is it and how do I avoid?

As long as you're getting a good crop eventually, I wouldn't worry about it - the fruits should be thinned out while they're still small before June to about one every 2 inches, but it sounds as if your tree is doing this automatically!
