A good sunny position to begin with. Cut it down close to the ground in the autumn or winter when all top growth has become dead. I spray mine with a systemic fungicide in the summer to prevent infections, as my varieties are a little prone. Also good air circulation around it is important to help to reduce fungal disease, so don't let other plants crowd it too closely. (I assumed you meant the perennial type).
