I bought a tree which I thought was a cherry blosso. Although there was some blossom it didnt flower as the other cherry Blossoms in the area. However, today I have discovered "CHERRIES"! Hurrah I thought. However, How do I know they are safe to eat?

If the tree is Prunus something or other, the "cherries" may not be very nice if they're not really eaters, but they won't kill you.
