I have some kind of miniature heather growing in my lawn. When you touch it, it leaves a black mark on your hands. What is it and how do I get rid of it.

I wonder if it is a fungus similar to ergot. that would explain the black stain as it is the fungal spores.
better photo needed really.

It's a slime mold of some kind, but I need to do more research on the best cure.
