Hazel tree in garden is growing catkins and the leaves haven't fallen yet, it's October. As Victor Meldrew would say "I don't believe it". Is this normal? I thought maybe March time. Any ideas or is it just the weather and how will it affect the tree? Any help? Thanks, Ann

The catkins do form in the autumn as small hard brown structures and usually come spring the catkins develop further and open to look like proper 'furry' catkins.

It's just the random weather - not much you can do about it, except hope there'll be some catkins left for spring when it arrives. I heard some apple trees are blossoming now too...
