Never cut the flowering stem off, you should get another flush of flowers.

I think it's a Phalaenopsis Orchid (moth orchid). I have several. Is it worth keeping? if you like orchids or maybe you can find a nice home for it. You should water the roots & add a pinch of of orchid food. It will rest for about 3 months, then start the bloom cycle again.

Thanks Bathgate, I did think it looked like an orchid from the pot and roots :-)

You're welcome Daylily. I have recently posted several pictures in my gallery if you'd like to see if we have a match.

Definitely an or hid, and I managed to get one to reflower. Once, by cutting the spent flowering stem away atthe base. The plant then sent up a new stem with buds.

I have a yellow phalaenopsis 'dragons charm' that I have had for about 20 years. It lives in the bathroom and about monthly I drench it with rainwater and leave it to drain well. I always cut the flowered stem down after the last flower has gone over. This year I have 2 stems with the first just going over now. I have others moth orchids that repeat flower aswell. If your friend liked it and likes a challenge she could follow the instructions in my first reply. They can thrive on neglect in the right situation.

Well well fooled again. I thought it looked more orchidy from the look of the stems but had never seen one grown round a frame like that. Or with leaves ike that either come to think of it. Why don't i just go back to sleep?
I cut my Phalaenopsis's original flower stem down to the base and it was two years before it flowered again. Recently I read the suggestion to cut the stem just above a leaf bud so will try that next time.

Previous question
« Shoul have asked this previously but when should I plant the hollyhock seeds?
She needs to cut the flowered stems back to the base. It will flower again. The leaves look healthy so place in room with some humidity or stand in pebble dish with water but not touching base of plant pot. Minimal watering and don't let it get too moist. Check with orchid care website.
Ps it looks like it's been trained over and around the wire frame ( the existing flowers may be hiding another bud) they flower from the bottom up so the flowers that are there are at the end of a stem.
