many clematis get 'bare legs' woody stems. when did you last prune it?
it is a group 3 clematis which means in spring you cut it down to about 8-12" from the soil.
I have a similar one that I weave the new growth close to the horizontal up the arch. it then has more flowers further down the arch. The flowers are on the tips of each shoot.
by the end of august it tends to be so big that the weight brings the new growth down to the lower areas so they appear to be in the middle of the plant.
Hope this helps.
