Could you please suggest types of plants which can be used on a sloped embankment. Soil is sandy to poor. Would prefer ground covering plants.

Vinca would stabilise the soil as it creeps close to the soil and roots every few inches. V.major Variegata is pretty. V. minor comes in varieties with different leaf colours - gold & vareigated silver.
Ivies are robust and come in attractive varieties.
Lamium species may help too.
Is the slope in sun or shade or some of each?

Ajuga Reptans and Lamium are great ground cover and will grow most places. They also have lovely pretty flowers and are both pretty much evergreen. Geraniums do well too, particularly Geranium Nodosum and Macrorrhizum which will grow in dry shade, so are very robust. For the spring, what about Epimedium, which covers ground fast and is evergreen, with small but very pretty flowers in April. There are some great ground cover roses too...mine is called 'scented carpet' and is a purply magenta colour. Have a look at Annellas pages as she has a stunning slope and you'll be sure to get some inspiration there! Good luck! Karen :))

If it is dry and sunny, maybe Dragon's Blood Sedum (Sedum spurium), or Hardy Ice Plant (Delosperma cooperi).
