My magnolia stellata won't flower

I've had a magnolia stellata for about18 years but the last few years it has hardly produced any flowers. This year it has a measly five. It is in a sheltered position backed by a south facing wall and is protected from morning sun. Several neighbours have them too but theirs are full of blooms.

Ah! Guilty as charged! No, I have not fed it. I have recently mulched it with some lovely garden compost, but I will take your advice and start to feed it. Thankyou!

I can think of two possible reasons. Firstly, it may not be making much new growth - do you feed it annually? Secondly, it may be dry at the roots which may inhibit flower bud formation; regular watering, especially during dry spells, will help
