this is the end of the first season for my red gooseberry bush .do i need to trim it back ?

Do it in February. Tip back the leaders but only a little if it is a young bush - at this stage you should concentrate on developing a nice open bowl shape. Cut off the side shoots from the main branches leaving about four buds on each, and take out any branches growing across rather than outwards. Then give a feed of sulphate of potash to encourage good flowering.
In future years you can also trim the side shoots a little after fruiting if you want to.
