Looking back a year...

I just looked back, and my plants are exactly a month ahead of where they were last year. Everything that is growing now, and the flowers…was held back last year until mid April. If you have a minute, look back and see if yours are the same. It just shows how late spring was last year..I don’t know how we stood it! Lol!

I've just looked back Karen, I have a blog that I posted on March13th last year and to my surprise mine is at exactly the same stage, the only difference in my garden is in the bottom pond, I already have Marsh Marigolds in full bloom, they came out last week, last years photograph they are just budding up..

Well well...that is surprising! Thanks for sharing! X

I've checked my comments and we were still talking about snow in March. 28th of February our car was snowed in. 18th March Wildrose had snow in her garden when I didn't, but we were expecting more. It has been a milder start to March, but as you know, Karen, it's not over yet.

I think mine's ahead, I've not been able to directly compare but this time last year snow had only just thawed even though daffs were out then.
I did note crocus were out this time last year, with snow covering them, this year they were all finished about a month back

Mine is earlier than I have ever known and all the spring flowers are out at once.Just wondering what there will be left in April! The tulips that were meant to be for May are flowering now in containers too.

Linda..take heart! The forecast is good as of Monday and thereafter! Spring is coming!

Gosh Stera...I only have my tiny pink species tulips out. The wind and rain have wrecked my crocuses, but the narcissi are coming on well now. You are well ahead!

On 16th March last year it was 11 degrees, blue sky and sunshine. The following day temps dropped to 4 degrees with sleet and snow! I only know because we took a walk around our local gardens on the 16th. Forsythia was out in bloom, not so far this year and Crocus were looking great, all finished now. Horrible wind blowing strongly today so I have given up after an hour outside ... :o(

You said it, Karen. Good! My Tulips are flowering and the Forsythia is flowering but only one flower on my Camellia. The Bergenias have large flower heads too. I hope the Daffodils don't get flattened with the wind.

Linda...today I was so hacked off, I got out my Acrylics and started a painting. This only happens in extreme circumstances! But the painting will probably never be finished as its going to be fine starting Monday! So I only have one more day to paint. ;)

I'm sure some plants function by day length (my hamamelis always start flowering in the second week of January), while others are triggered by the temperature

The pink magnolia is in full bloom ; the white one is holding back. (Magnolias are wise plants, according to an old gardener friend!!). Spring flowers in tubs are popping out and OH is talking about "planting" our primulas in the walls. (This means placing pots in the hollow between two Purbeck stone walls. We used to have hyacinths actually planted here for years, but weeding was a nuisance so I had the idea of lining the hollow and then placing pots inside the cavity. Idea has worked out quite well as can then bring on plants in the greenhouse).
(Still think we have lost lots of buds to deer!)

The bulbs and spring flowers are opening so quickly now but I haven't yet managed to give our lawns its first cut, I had done it last year but its simply too wet to even try, today we've had everything except fog, I've avoided going into the g'houses because of the high winds, its certainly Mad March Weather this year, snowing and hailstones as I write, it was beautiful this morning, blue sky and sunshine....

We've managed to get one lawn cut but since then the weather has been depressing - lots of wind and rain. My potted Camelia is still hiding out of the wind - the pot blows over otherwise- so though it's flowering better than it has before I'm not really getting the full benefit. Hoping to get it in the ground this coming Autumn.
