Autumn Clear-Out 6

The Autumn Clear-Out continues as the weather allows. Saturday and today we had good enough weather to get outdoors. Hasn’t this been such a wet season? But the good thing is, when we get a sparkling sunlit day as we did today, it just seems all the more beautiful and precious. And today really was glorious. I worked on the South Facing patio, without a coat, all morning until about 1pm when the sun went behind a cloud and it was suddenly freezing cold again. But I didn’t mind because I was very hungry and had done enough work.

Anyway, these few blessed hours allowed me to sweep the patio and get the pots rearranged for the winter. I have moved my two potted pears to this wall too as they weren’t warm enough on the West Facing aspect. This has left a big space on that gable end which I will decide what to do with later on.

I also had time to start cutting back and pruning in the Rosy patio border, but that is only just started and I still have a lot of work to do there.

Saturday was dry but not sunny. I did similar work in the front door area and rearranged pots there to be welcoming through the rest of this season. I will probably keep it like this until mid January. I’ve bought some little Robin Red Breast ornaments to add more little pops of red and cuteness to the overall effect. And there are are some potted red cyclamen too.

Oh well…back to rain and wind tomorrow. :(

Looks good Karen , the plants look lovely and looks like that Hippeastum is determined not to be out left out as it peeps through the blind, it’s been a lovely day down here today, plenty of blue sky and bursts of sunshine and tomorrow we have a day of heavy rain for Derby, last week the Derwent flooded parts of the city and looks like we may have the same again so I will tog my self up again to get my jobs done, may take a canoe with me.

Thanks Julien. We have bright sky at the moment. A friend of mine is heading down to Derby this weekend for a funeral...hope it doesn’t get any worse.

The weather has been shocking but you managed to get a lot done Karen and it's looking really nice. I have only got some of the fallen leaves bagged because we have had very few days without rain. What would I give for a few sunny crisp days.

Rain here, seems every alternate day. No leaves left on my Pear trees, Apple leaves just hanging on. The ground is so waterlogged on my allotment I don't want to even try to dig.

just wall to wall rain with a bit of hail and thunder here today. So yet again no gardening. But that does mean I am sewing.

Spare a thought for Toria and me for the weekend as we are up in Sunderland doing rock pool dipping/seaweed identification so she can do beadlet anemone surveys for her dissertation. Low tide is about 3.30 so we will have a good 6 hrs out there in the rain and N/E winds.

That sounds very interesting seaburngirl, Brrrrr wrap up well against those northeasterly winds, a flask of soup would be nice to keep you going.

Oh, I do not like the sound of that SBG! Hope it doesn't get too wild. :)

I am actually looking forward to it ;o) From being little, about 3yrs of age, I have rock pooled and shared it with my girls when we went 'home' to visit my eldest brother.
What is really nice is that ecology is going to be her career. [the eldest went into fashion and is a garment tech]. Fort Dale in Wales was the spark that ignited the sea anemone interest. And lets face it we are hardy souls up in the NE. Hot chocolate preferable to soup and the chippy will be open too :o))

Isn't it grand to have a little respite from all this blooming rain?......you have certainly made the most of it Karen, and the pots look really good, we have been busy revamping the front garden, hard work, but it's now looking much better.....

Your autumn clear-out has made your house look so much better!

I had to make the page 4x bigger to see the Amaryllis in the window! I have one in the kitchen that is coming to an end & one that has buds that will open during this week.

It seems that we are in for a few quiet days this week & in fact I was able to take advantage of the sunny afternoon to plant up some Pansies in the pots vacated by the Begonias.

Thanks Angela. Another beautiful sparkling day today. But by 3pm the ground was soft enough to dig and I got two new standard roses in, and a shrub rose moved. I really enjoyed today. Love the countryside views in the autumn!

Balcony, thankyou! The Amaryllis now has four flower buds on it and one is starting to open. It has a second shoot at the base, but its not growing. Do you think it will grow once the first stem is over?

18 Nov, 2019

If it is a bud then yes but if it is leaves then obviously not but you should let them grow. Have you grown Amaryllis before? The leaves can get very long once fully grown!

19 Nov, 2019

Ah...I hadn’t thought that...it could well be leaves. I have grown them before, yes. But not for a few years. Thank you!

One way of distinguishing leaves from flower buds is to look at where they are coming from, if they are coming from the centre then they are leaves, if they are coming from the side they are buds.

20 Nov, 2019

Ah, OK....I'd say this is from the side. I'll get a photo tomorrow in the daylight and see what you think. :)

Nice to see the Amaryllis has opened for you! :)
