This is what we have been up to over the summer!

I am sorry I haven’t been commenting and posting much this summer but I would like to show you why.
Although I have always loved my fish pond we decided early in the year to reduce the size of it as I was finding that the cleaning of the conservatory windows outside (from the inside)was becoming a pain, literally. After tossing a few ideas at one another it was eventually agreed that we would try to build a D shaped pond at the far side of the conservatory with the hope that we would still be able to see and feed the fish from inside, especially during the winter months. I had also noticed that the sun shines onto this area first thing in the morning and I thought it would make an ideal place to sit outside with my early morning cuppa.

First we had to make a holding tank for the fish and pot up the plants from the borders of the pond. We used the ladders to form a v shape on the patio and laid a tarpaulin over them.

Catching the fish was no mean feat. lol. It was amazing how big the fish had grown over the years, then we started to syphon out the water.

We were then left with a very muddy, yukky hole.

Hauling out the old liner was a really heavy mucky job but after cutting it into manageable sections we got it out.. phew!!

Then at last it was time for T to start to build the new pond.

For the next week it rained at least once every day, leaving us with a real quagmire. Sods Law!!! You know when you get to the point where you wish you had never started it???

Anyway, T toiled on and gradually the new pond and patio emerged from the rubble..

And now, thanks to T’s brilliant efforts we have a lovely new pond and patio area.

Such hard work but the end result is wonderful! A great design. Worth all the effort. Such a clever OH you have.

Thank you Anget.. it’s a pleasure to be able to spend the time just sitting out there now all the building work and painting is finished. I am eager to get the planting started in the borders now. So far I have only managed to replant the Hostas in the far border and put a Pieris in the corner planter which I filled with ericaceous compost. .

Thanks Meadowland for your lovely comment. We reused the old pump, I painted it with black hammerite while it was waiting to be plumbed in again. It took a bit of tweaking to get it running well.

Wow you really worked hard on that, but it paid off
it looks beautiful! What a job that was.

I know to my cost what hard work it is moving a pond and I admire your guts at such a huge undertaking.
The new pond looks great and I love the new patio. Well done T, but I'm sure you've also worked just as hard. I bet the fish are very happy in their new home.

All that hard work has been worth it, the new pond must enhances the view from your conservatory. The patio area looks splendid, a touch of the Mediterranean. Love the finish, so stylish.

Thanks everyone. We agonised over which colour to paint the walls. I first painted them white (because we had lots) but it looked too stark and cold and showed up every bump and hollow. I wanted a warm orangey yellow and eventually we settled on the Sandstone sandy colour. T didn’t like it at first but it’s grown on him...lol
I didn’t know we still had the strength to shift so much rock and rubble, but it’s definitely the last ‘big’ job for us as we slide into our dotage..lol
I can’t wait for our children to see it now. I hope it won’t be too long before they will visit. They are trying to protect us from the Dam virus.

Wow - you must both be delighted ... it’s a brilliant improvement, really stylish. And I love the fact that the pond has a wide rim so you can sit there and trail your hand through the water. Wonderful!

No splashing about in the pond now H'bird, you and the fish are safe when the windows need cleaning, it must have been very hard work at times but well worth it, looks absolutely wonderful, your hubby is worth his weight in gold, certainly knows how to transform things. I love it and hope you get years of relaxation on the new patio admiring it all..Enjoy planting it all up...

Thanks for your lovely comments Sheila, Klahanie and Bloomer. I am proud of it but most of all I am enjoying the clean look of it all. When it was very warm on Monday morning I was very tempted to sit with my feet in the water...lol. but the fish have had enough shocks lately...

Thanks Lincs, we must have posted at the same time..
T has made a brilliant job of it. Somehow he seems to know just what I want things to be. He says if anything happens to the fish he will turn it into a hot tub...lol

That is brilliant Homebird! Your hubby must have a lot of patience and it was a clever idea to do this! Hasn't he worked hard! I didn't realise you had so many steps up to your garden. Now you will be able to wash your windows ! Hahaa!
