Can't stop buying !!! :(

If you are a plants person you know what I mean when I say I can’t stop buying plants. I just can’t help it, whenever I see a place selling plants I just HAVE to have a look and usually end up buying something.

A few weeks ago I went to the dentist in a little town not far away, for a check up, and there’s a small garden centre near by, so before going home I called there (just for a look lol)
In fact I think my car would have driven itself there anyway, it being so used to stopping at that garden centre every time I pass that way.

I bought this – a perennial Rudbeckia.

…..

Earlier this week I was able to go to a different town a few miles away, where there is a little garden centre in a road behind the market, and it was the first place I called at after coming off the bus … (obviously !)

I was spoilt for choice, as usual in that place, and couldn’t resist these plants …

Kalimeris yomena ‘Shogun’
It grows to about 18 inches tall and has blue aster-like flowers in autumn and variegated leaves :-

Anemone ‘Fantasy Jasmine’
Another short plant, only growing 18 inches high, and the flowers are so pretty :-

The plants were heavy for my arthritic shoulders to carry around the town and it would have been better if I’d gone to the garden centre last … but I was thinking about it all the way there on the bus and couldn’t wait to get there to see what they had in store ! :D … do you know what I mean ?

I also bought this little houseleek ‘Flaming Web’ for Beryl. She wasn’t with me and I know they are a favourite plant of hers :-

When I got home, the first thing Beryl said as I went in through the door was “What plants did you buy then ?”
… and that’s exactly what I thought she’d say :D

We all have that 'vice' Hywel...it's so addictive...your Anemone Fantasy jasmine is adorable. Would love to have that one.

Ha-ha - I've been wondering if there is a tee shirt we could all wear while shopping - 'Please do not sell this person any plant - they have a serious addiction problem'!

I know I could do with one!

Lovely buys!!!! Cheers up November!

We know exactly what you mean, Hywel. And what a lovely comment of Beryl’s . . . my OH usually says “where are you going to put that?!

I am just the same!
When I do my main food shop I go to the nearby garden centre for a cup of coffee and............whatever catches my eye!! I usually manage to find something! This particular garden centre gives reward vouchers, so now and then I get a plant 'for free!'
Keep on spoiling yourselves is my advice!

Goodness, this blog made us laugh a lot.
After reading the first sentence I called my husband and translated for him. The first question he asked was, how many acres does he have to plant. When we were still living in the apartment our balcony was an almost impenetrable jungle.
We know this tendency to just take a look and always go out with something. Once or twice a week we have lunch at a self-service restaurant in the city center, next to a flower shop. My husband only allows me to look through the fence that separates the two properties. And only park after the flower shop, if parking before surely returns home with some greens in the car.
I agree with Beryl, succulents are very beautiful. Unfortunately I lost all mine because of the frost.
We loved your blog: o)))))

yes I too have this 'addiction' The Kalimeris is beautiful. I have the plain pinky flowered one 'Charlotte'. It is a good doer but it can run if it is very happy.
I think it is rude not to buy when you have walked through the door, especially in little local gc. I don't have the same impulses in the big chains though.

Its our monthly HPS meeting tonight and although I sell plants I always come back with something new.

Everyone is entitled to indulge in whatever makes us most happy, so I agree with Wild Rose, keep on spoiling yourself in this way. There are a lot worse addictions than lovely plants, aren't there, things that ruin health, while they gobble up your money. How about booze. Canabis, ciggies etc. I'm always buying plants, but I hate it when they don't always thrive. I've lost so many to winter wet, frost, that is expensive. Could write quite a list of the deceased! RIP.

I think us gardeners are all the same, we just cannot help ourselves if we see a garden centre and the only problem most of us have is that, where do we put them as most of the garden is full but somehow we or always seem to find that perfect place for them, I particularly enjoy looking at the garden tools etc even though I have every conceivable tool you can mention, and the wife always reminds me of that, she hates me looking at the tools, some nice plants you have Hywel.

Thank you all for reading my blog, and for all your tales :D

Hywel I have lost my partner in crime for a while, my youngest daughter is now a teacher full time, therefore our trips out are only during the school holidays, unfortunately this year they are also having a huge extension built at their house, the garden has been taken up with scaffolding and building materials, no trips out to the GC's for us, I think we've both saved a fair amount of money, as you know I dislike shopping with a vengeance so I don't even browse the plant sections at the supermarkets, in and out as fast as possible, that will all change back next springtime when my Juliet is able to claim her garden back again, lol...You keep on buying Hywel, its good for ones peace of mind and in my opinion money well spent...

Thanks Daylily you have some lovely new plants too :)

Thanks Sue, I'm sorry you haven't been able to buy many plants recently but you can make up for it next year :)

Just in case we're out your way, where are the Garden centres?

8 Nov, 2019

They are small garden centres. One is behind Carmarthen market and one is by Llandeilo railway station.

9 Nov, 2019

Yes Hywel..I am exactly the same ! When I go to our local supermarket , just off this road is a large nursery and Rick is used to me by now when I say we have run out of bread etc. as I always have to call there where I always have to buy ! And as you say, the car just takes me there ! Hahaa!
I have three Rudbeckia Goldsturn and they flower for months. In fact mine are still flowering now !

9 Nov, 2019

Thank you Rose, I will look forward to seeing it flowering next year :)

I have to agree with you and all the others, Hywel! Garden centres, markets, shops selling plants outside - my favourite type of shopping above all others!
You have picked up some lovely plants too! As the others have said; it really cheers up a damp, dark November! ;0)

We are all the same Hywel can't resist "Just Looking " are always the first words we say , also our car has a built in Satnav it leads us straight to any garden centres on its radar .. you made some good choices ,I suggest you buy one of those shopping trolleys on wheels x

10 Nov, 2019

Hywel .. some super choices there !

10 Nov, 2019

Thank you all for your nice comments about my plants …

Kate I have chosen some late flowering plants to brighten up the autumn :)

Thanks for the suggestion Amy, if I had a trolley I would be buying even more plants lol :D x

Thank you TT, I am glad you like my choice of plants
:) x

11 Nov, 2019

Thank you Hywel. One of these days I'll get to Carmarthen on a Wednesday...

11 Nov, 2019

All I do is 'click, click, click' on my favorite gardening website and the plants show up at my front door. Could be really dangerous. Those hard to find plants are only a click away.

12 Nov, 2019

I hope you do go there one day Sue :) On a Wednesday and Saturday there are also plant stalls along the road down the side of Marks and Spencer.

It's easy isn't it Bathgate, I have done that loads of times ... but it's a nice change to get out of the house for an afternoon, going for a walk somewhere and seeing what's in the garden centres.

12 Nov, 2019

Oh yes it's definitely a treat to go out to the garden centers and be in the company of other plant addicts.

12 Nov, 2019

The people in the two small garden centres I went to are very knowledgeable about plants and they can answer most questions one might have :)

13 Nov, 2019

Hywel what a lovely addiction to have 🙂 and what a fine choice of plants your garden will be blooming in 2020 .

13 Nov, 2019

Thank you :)

My OH has just shown me photos taken today of SNOW in South West Wales! Are any of you affected? Hope you’re OK.

14 Nov, 2019

Nothing at all here but strong winds and rain. Maybe the snow was on the Preselli hills - they often get a bit when nobody else has any.

14 Nov, 2019

That’s good Sue . . . it did seem a bit early.

14 Nov, 2019

I saw a few flakes coming down last night here, being on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, but it was nothing worth bothering about. The badly hit areas were further east.

14 Nov, 2019

We had flurries on Tuesday. The weather man said we'll be in the icebox all next week. BRRrrr!!

14 Nov, 2019

I hope the freeze doesn't last long for you …
