Work in progress

I haven’t been able to do much in my garden lately, and won’t for a while. The reason being that I am having some building work done there, and the patio and what I call ‘the lean-to’ are being demolished to make way for a small extension and new patio.

All the pots/tubs, table and chairs, etc etc that were on the patio and inside the lean-to are now about the garden and there isn’t much room to move around.

The builders began their work a few days ago …

Taken from the side entrance …

From inside the half demolished ‘lean-to’ …

=^..^= What’s going on here ?? =^..^=

I’ve been told it will take two to three weeks to complete and I’ll be glad to have it finished before the winter sets in :)

What a change that will be for you Hywel, thankfully before the winter...and such a spectacular view of that Welsh countryside.

Wow Hywel, that's really radical! Well done you for grasping the nettle. It will be a fantastic improvement and I'm sure you'll love it! Will it have huge windows so you can still use it for overwintering (and give Bella somewhere to soak up the sun in the winter...?)

Thank you both, the decking was rotten and the lean-to damp so they had to go.

The new build will be about 8 inches wider than the old lean-to and will have big windows looking out, on top of a short wall.
The old outside loo (which was now inside the lean-to) will be repositioned. I want to keep it since it is handy for fixing a hose pipe and getting water for my plants (and for me when I'm in the garden - saves going all the way upstairs lol)

I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I'm sure you'll be pleased with the result. Bella looks as if she is enjoying new scents/places to explore!

Unfortunately building works often create more scenes of a bomb site than anything else till it is finished! As your building work will be over by the end of the October, hopefully, you will still have a couple of months to get organised & things back to the way you like them! πŸ˜ƒ

Poor Bella must be so confused wondering what's going on & who these men are invading her space & tearing everything apart! Nevertheless she will be able to lie down in a place that gets some winter sunshine while out of cold winds & rain. πŸ˜ƒ

going to be a lovely finished result . I got down whilst we had work being done and very happy at end . Although I had work going on when it was cold and wet so no escape. Look forward to seeing result

It will definitely be lovely once it’s complete, especially before the clocks go back and winter creeps in! It’s quite exciting as well as frustrating at the same time, Hywel!
Gorgeous views of that lovely Welsh green countryside too.
Bella is looking like she’s inspecting the builders work!!!

I bet one of the things you'll be most grateful for is a downstairs loo! And you'll be able to sit and look at the garden in bad weather and sunbathe a bit when its cold. (no connection with the first sentence, lol)I'm quite excited for you and really looking forward to seeing the finished building!

Thanks for your comments ...

Anget and Kate Bella has inspected every inch of it :D

Balcony I am hoping to get some plants in there before the winter, probably cacti :D

Glad you're ok now Paul, it can be very daunting :)

Sue the toilet is already there and working but it's very damp, and down some steps so difficult to get into. It's going to be repositioned.
I'll have some chairs in there to sit on lol :D
I'm going to put the cooker and noisy freezer in there too.

How exciting Hywel, it’s going to be great!

22 Sep, 2021

I am looking forward to see it finished Hywel. I bet you too :-)

Thank you Sheila and Klahanie :)

23 Sep, 2021

it will be worth all the upset when it is done. All that new space to fill haha.

hope it comes in on time so you can appreciate it during the winter.

Hywel I just remembered something. If you have a radiator in there as part of your central heating system (no need to have it turned on!) it alters your insurance because it counts as part of the house rather than an add on, so the cover is better. We only found out when the work had been done, so it was rather a bonus.

23 Sep, 2021

I've found that all alterations tend to be rather messy and upsetting, to begin with, but worth it in the end. I'm sure you'll be glad you had the work done in the end. Keep us posted of work in progress won't you.

It will be great when finished Hywel.

23 Sep, 2021

Thanks for your comments ... the mess is temporary and when it's completed it will be better than the cold damp lean-to with wooden floor :)

Sue, the man from building regulations came here and said if I wanted a radiator in there it would be classed as a dwelling room and I would need planning permission, but that would take ages, and I want it done before the winter.
He said without heating it would be classed as a porch and I would not need planning permission.
I've decided to wait until it has been completed and inspected and then I'll have a radiator put in later.

23 Sep, 2021

I don't cope very well with disruption Hywel but I am already looking forward to the finished result as I think you will be very happy with it.

They seem to be making good progress so far, so I hope the weather remains on their side from now on.

23 Sep, 2021

Yes Chris they are getting on well, finishing the floor today and then build up the walls.

24 Sep, 2021

That sounds like a clever move Hywel :-))

24 Sep, 2021

Its going to be great when its all done Hywel and then you can enjoy planning your garden for next year!

24 Sep, 2021

Looking forward to seeing the end result, I'm sure you will be delighted with it. Bella will inspect it to see if all is satisfactory ( for her). Nice that it will all be finished before winter sets in. Keep us all posted, it's very interesting.

24 Sep, 2021

Well, as a porch it will be pretty impressive! When we had our conservatory done it was a replacement for one on the same site so we didn't need planning. Its a good plan to wait and put the radiator in afterwards. Good thinking that man! I guess you didn't tell him you were going to put the cooker in there as well...
Fingers crossed the weather will be kind to you.

24 Sep, 2021

Thank you all :) I'll show a few more photos of the work later.

I have more plans for next year Rose ...

If it's good enough for Bella it's good enough for anyone Feverfew :D

The less you say the better Sue, He asked me what I was going to use the room for and I said it was to overwinter my cacti !

I'm looking forward to seeing it all come to completion Hywel, sounds good to me, going to be so much better than the damp leanto, warmer for you when tending to your plants/cacti or simply admiring the view, Bella will love it, are you having a catflap for her so she can come and go when she wants to, she does look as though she is keeping an eye on things, xx..

26 Sep, 2021

Thank you Sue, the cat flap is somewhere else. If I put one here there'd also have to be one in the French doors that lead into the next room, and it would spoil the look of them.
There is a cat flap in the conservatory door and that's where Bella is used to it, so when the conservatory is pulled down next year I'll have to put another cat flap in the new wall that's going to replace the conservatory (more about that later)

26 Sep, 2021

Good grief Hywel, its certainly all happening at your house!
Of course the new room is for your cacti. I don't suppose the planning man reads Goy much.

26 Sep, 2021

It is all desperately needed Sue Steragram, lots to do next year !

As it happens I know the building regs man's mother, she loves her garden but her son doesn't know what a plant is. And he doesn't know I know his mother :)

27 Sep, 2021

That made me laugh Hywel πŸ˜ƒ!

27 Sep, 2021

Me too!

27 Sep, 2021

I will look forward to seeing them Hywel!
