Pimenta dioica - Allspice Tree

My Allspice tree has grown to 6' (2m) tall in it's pot in two years. It was originally a tiny 1/2" (1.27cm) tall plant when I got it. The whole tree smells like Allspice. The leaves are the best way to use Allspice; however, they don't store well (for any length of time). This is why the Allspice of commerce is ground from the berries. Photo taken on Oct. 26, 2013.

Yes, Bay tree and California Bay tree (Umbellularia californica - which is native) is very widely grown here and becomes a gigantic tree. These are very hardy trees...the Allspice tree is native to the tropics...it's hardy here but not outside subtropical climates.
I love the smell of the Allspice tree much better than the Bay trees.

Love the flavour of allspice, the only hardy similar tree would be bay over here.....we use the leaves (which keep very well).
