Lots of lovely berries, but it's had a lot of leaf drop this summer...

Thank you Amy,I posted a comment about it on Meadowland's photo yesterday, saying how many leaves it had dropped this year, and had a few helpful suggestions..It doesn't look too bad from this photo, but it has always been quite dense in the past..I can see right through it now..Maybe just one of those things? It may do better this year :o)

Hi Bloomer, looks a fantastic specimen! Beautiful show of berries. My holly has been the same this year, quite sparse and I can see through it. I took advice from many on GOY and added a little pipe, buried mostly underground to aid watering as it was mentioned it may have been too dry earlier on?

Thank you Kate.I do love it ,and I get lots of comments about it from Neighbours etc, which is nice.
It was a new build when we moved here, almost 18 years ago,and lots of builders rubble had been hidden, (dumped ) under the lawn at the front,so a kind friend actually had to use a Pneumatic drill to make that planting hole ! it took him two hours to make it fit for purpose :o(
It did have a good start, but on reflection,it is more than likely, the poor thing hasn't had much attention over the years ! Maybe it's time to rectify that, and treat it with a bit more respect :o)I hope yours starts to recover this year too :o) .

A very handsome shrub indeed, and it looks great. Perhaps it is just having a growth spurt. :) If you had to use a drill to make the plant hole, perhaps it has filled the 'pot' you created and can't make headway into the surrounding soil (if there is any). It may have hit rocks and old bricks etc. and is suffering from effectively being pot-bound. Perhaps a good feed and it might pick up again. I'm wondering if in future it may become a kind of pseudo 'Bonsai' holly. Which would mean keeping it pruned and well fed to make up for the lack of root run. It looks lovely though! :)

Maybe it is having a growth spurt,Karen..quite possible I guess..When I said a hole ,it was about 3 feet in diameter, and plenty of good compost plus soil was added.. :o) No wonder it took the poor lad about 2 hours to do it ! I did say not to bother, but he insisted. Needless to say,I think he realised what it entailed when it was too late !.He still speaks to me,when he comes to see his Aunt next door .Lol.x

Sandra don't worry we had 15 holly trees in out previous garden people use to come round to collect branches for decoration ,the years seemed to alternate between either loaded with berries or not so many, I believe they need to 'rest ' sometimes ... a bit like us really Lol x

Thank you Amy,that is good to know.Looks like it's it's turn for lots of berries this year then ? I shall 'rest' while admiring it Lol xx

Beautiful red berries and I hope they will last for you until Christmas.
My dad gave us a holly many years ago which is growing near the house. It is similar to yours as it is a variegated one but only gets a few berries now and then. I shall tell it about yours and hope for an improvement!!!
