Have just bought this for a friend's garden, should have bought two!

Its a great winter plant. It does tend to grow a bit of a thicket though. Every year I remove the new shoots that form low down on it, to keep it a bit more 'tree-like'. It doesn't affect the flowering at all.

That's interesting Karen, I've pruned mine hard and incorrectly as not many flowers. So basically you keep the old wood?

Yes Dawn. If you read up, they tell you that it flowers on new wood. But it actually flowers on all its wood. Keep the new wood that you like, and cut out all the shoots you don't like. The ones that are crossing or crowding the structure. Keep some on the main stems, but cut out the inward growing ones. As long as you allow some new growth to stay you will still get plenty of blooms x

Great. Thanks Karen, when do you prune after flowering?

I’m sorry Dawn... rereading above...it flowers on old wood not new. I am very confused at the moment! Honestly, this cold is still filling my head up...theres no room for thinking at all up there! ;) I prune it in late/summer autumn...when the new shoots have grown I remove the unwanted ones. The first one I grew, in my first garden, I never pruned it and it grew into a huge, ugly thicket. This one has at least got a good shape with five good strong stems at the base. Everything that sprouts lower than a foot up them gets cut off, and anything higher up that crosses or grows into the centre also. It is developing like a multi-stemmed small tree, which is exactly what I want.

That's OK Karen, thanks for the update. Mine was a ugly thicket too. I really need to rejuvenate it, I looked at it today, I note your advice :-)

Lovely to see the new season appearing.

I wish Linda! This has been flowering since October. However, there are some snowdrops showing their little white heads....not long now. Hope its not a damaging wind in Glasgow!
