Snowdrops under the Betula jaquemontii 'Silver Shadow' Trees

Snowdrops under the Betula jaquemontii 'Silver Shadow' Trees

Instead of thinking about how long the winter months are, I am trying hard to enjoy the winter flowers, and also to be grateful for the fact that I still have the whole of the growing season ahead of me. Positive thinking....;)

I'm also going to split that giant yellow thistle (Centaurea gigantea at the rear of the pic) this year, so I have more than one clump of that to enjoy through the Golden Border. Will have to wait until the rain stops though!

Exactly my thoughts Karen, plus as autumn turns into winter we have the winter show to look forward to, it’s so good to see colour in winter instead of a brown/green garden for months.

Yes! A winter garden can really lift my mood as well. Love my red cornus. I have three yellow ones in the Golden border, but they are still less than a year in, so hopefully they will grow more this year. Soon be time to cut them all back! And I got my two Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ in this week too!

THE SNOWDROPS ARE REALLY LOVELY. I BET THE BIRDS LIKE THIS PART OF YOUR GARDEN.

Well, no, not really as its close to the road. But this week I moved the birdbath there, so they might be tempted to go there more now. It happened because I was moving a plant and discovered a large tree stump buried about 6 “ under the soil. There’s no getting it out...far too big for me to tackle. So i thought I’d place the birdbath there to mark the spot where I can’t plant anything!

SOUNDS A GOOD IDEA, HAVE YOU TRIED HANGING A SMALL BIRDFEEDER THERE KAREN?

Good idea...I will.

do you dead head the centaura. I leave mine and I find seeds often germinate in the seed head. spare plants then. I usually get 4-6 plants every year this way. It is a real bee magnet in the summer.

Wow, SBG, thats a great idea. I will try that. I have now split and replanted the clump, so have three good sized clumps for this year. It doesn’t flower for very long, but I love it! And I don’t love that many herbaceous perennials!
