Syzygiym megacarpum - Giant Lau Lau

Syzygiym megacarpum - Giant Lau Lau (Syzygium megacarpum (Giant Lau Lau Tree))

My cute little rare Giant Lau Lau plant is growing so well. This little tropical tree is in the house, as it’s too small to be planted into the ground. It’s leaves grow to almost 2 ft (61 cm) long and 10 inches (25 cm) wide. The new leaves are maroon-red and are spectacular. Photo taken Dec. 27, 2022.

Klahanie,

This tree is so rare there’s very little information about it on the internet. I read it’s hardy down to 40 degrees f. (4.4 c) and it loves water. The fruit can be good and sweet to not so good, depending on individual plant. I hope to be able to get it to fruit in a few years. It actually doesn’t look like a mango tree.

Now, the one that could easily be mistaken as a mango tree is the Maprang (Bouea macrophylla) from Southeast Asia. The leaves are just slightly narrower. I have two. I’ll post some pics soon. You’ll swear it’s a mango tree. 😂

Looks like it's doing pretty well, there. Lush leaves and liking the new growth colour too. Thanks for adding the info. Very interesting.

Kate,

Thanks. It should do very well outside when it’s a little larger. It supposedly grows relatively fast.

Had to look that up. Should do fine for you since frost isnt a problem.
Your getting into the tropical fruit trees even more now Andy? You got the climate.

Yes, it should grow and do very well here. It’s too small to be outside right now.

I am getting into a lot of fruit trees, I’m so tired of the awful produce in the grocery stores. It’s no wonder why so many people are doing the food forest these days.

Looks like a very interesting little tree. Hope it continues to grow well for you & that one day you may be able to eat its fruit! 👍😀

Balcony,

I’ve read it’s like most Syzygium species where it produces fruit at around 2 years old.

The new leaves are much larger than any of the old leaves. So, that’s a good sign. It’ll go outside in March. I have very few plants in the house.
