This was tough ...

Some of you may recall seeing the two blue pots by our front door, amazingly they have been there for nine years now!

Each has had an Agave for six years now, that’s low-maintenance gardening if ever there was.

They should be root pruned once a year, but it was a job forgotten last year so yesterday OH and I carefully moved the pots to then remove the plants. A few shabby looking leaves were sawn off and the very sharp pointed ends of a new leaf was snipped off.

I was ashamed to see how many roots were going round and round the pots. I imagine if the Agaves were in the ground they would have formed new little plants, or pups as I think they are called, from those thick white growths you can see.

I had mixed up some garden soil with some bought in compost, also some grit, and the pots were filled with this mixture before we carefully put the plants back in.

Lastly, after sweeping up the mess we had made, I topped them with white stones left over from a project.

That’s it for another year!

Thank you all so very much for your lovely comments. The blue pots were a Christmas gift from our son and his wife ... they remembered I had said how nice they were (and I wasn't hinting at all!) back in the Summer and the pots went into a sale. I hope they will be there for many years to come .....

Thats the kind of garden job I really don’t enjoy. But well done, they look great. They are perfect for those blue pots!

Those Agaves look really nice in those pots.

Some agaves are tougher than you imagine. It's the combination of cold and wet they don't like, so this position suits them perfectly

Hard work but well worth doing ... I bet looking at them now makes you smile - as they do me! x

Sunny, your comment made me smile!

Thanks Karen, seed sowing today, much nicer job.

Thank you Siris.

That's so true Andrew, they are facing South and sheltered a little in the porch. They only get watered when I'm feeling sorry for them!

Oh thanks Sheila ... :o)

Thanks Phyl, I used to change the plants in the pots annually but most folk seem to like the Agaves, so they're going to stay!

Hello Sue, thanks for looking in. I was cross with myself for not tidying them up last year, then Michael said he would give me a hand. Hmm, I'm better off doing some jobs alone, but didn't want to refuse his help!

He's becoming pretty good at 'Hump it, lump it, dump it' with some garden tasks now ... :o))

A perfect match...the right plant in the right pot.....and they look so attractive either side of your front door..we don’t have any in pots now it was such a pain to repot....
