Daphne pontica hybrid

Daphne pontica hybrid (Daphne pontica hybrid)

The nurserywoman I bought this from thought it was probably a D.pontica x D.laureola cross. Whatever it is, it prefers heavy clay and semi shade

See www.junker.co.uk for the website of the nursery it came from. They are daphne specialists (among other things)

What does it smell like? For example, compared to Daphne Transatlantic Pink Eternal Fragrance, which scent I have smelled and know? Is it wafting (travelling by air)? Would it cope with hot dry summers in a USDA zone 7b? I already had one which died in the 2nd half of summer, though I watered it daily and it was in mostly shade. Spoil is heavy black clay, ph 7. Wondering if I have over watered it, esp in the warmer hours of the day. Or could it be applying liquid fertiliser for flowering plants in my want to force it to flower. It had been planted in early December 2016, overwintered under much snow ok, put new growth in the Spring and then shrivelled in the 2nd half of summer and dried out. I have a daphne Perfume Princes growing ok for 2 years 1 meter away from the Pontica Hybrid.
