I have been thinning out the plant growth in my small (6' x 4') wildlife pond and although the water seems o.k. the roots of the plants have black sludge on them when I pull them up. The pond is full of frogs and newts, should I worry about the sludge?

Thanks, I thought if the wildlife was happy, then I should be too.

No, it'll settle. Plus, it's growing medium for the plants and a hiding place for frogs sometimes, too.
