Anybody know what this root veg is please?
Looks like some sort of turnip or swede but not round enough, and getting on for as big as a small pumpkin.
Was in a fieldfull. Sorry about the quality. Is is celeriac?

I'd say it was a mangel wurzel - apart from anything I like the name!! (I did look it up and the picture is very similar).

I was going to say mangle wurzl but Cammomile got their first. I didn't know that it was still grown as a field crop.
Sugar beet would be another possibility but I think this is only grown in the eastern counties of England.

Yeah Steragram its a mangold or could be fodder beet which is very similar, lots are grown around here for winter fodder for cattle, sheep and even chopped up for horses.

Thank folks. I'd not have guessed that as those on the farm near us when I was kid were actually round ones.
They used to mince them up for cattle fodder & I was once allowed to go and get some for halloween lanterns (before anyone grew pumpkins)

Yes I'd forgotten that SG there is a village near us that has a "Punky night " where they use them like pumpkins and parade through the village and get judged at the end.

I'd have said it was the sort of swede that is fed to cattle up here, they aren't completely round. Not celery as that would have a lot of finger roots at the bottom and leaves are different - more like celery leaves.
