I'm never quite sure how long to keep compost (bought in bags from garden centre) or whether it can be used again after I've used it to propagate seeds or in seasonal pots etc. Can I spread it around the garden? What if it's ericaceous - will it do any harm if I spread it around thinly? How else to dispose of it? I had to get rid of my compost bin because of rats. Thanks!

I just throw mine onto garden, never sterilised it. But some recommend you sterilise it by pouring boiling water on it, then mix it with new compost to put a bit more nutrients into it

I just toss it out under my shrubs and roses.

I use old compost as a mulch, however not sure about ericaseous, suppose you could spread it thinly
