Two feet is deep enough for most hardy waterlilies. Some of the larger tropicals may need another foot. If in doubt, use a dwarf variety.

Sorry, Great, I must have posted at the same time. I hate to keep bursting your bubble, but in your bathtub...I mean pond, you only have room for one (1) dwarf waterlily, especially if you want any other plants. One rhizome will cover an area 1-2 meters across.

its ok tug I'll let you off!! lol Yeah I know I can only have one. I'm still choosing which one. I am so indecisive! Perhaps you should pick for me?? You can call It a bath tub I dont mind lol Thats what it is anyway. I wont call it a pond until it has a frog init ha ha

Pick for you? I can't often pick for myself! : D I was just joking around about the pond size anyway--if I had one now, that would be the size i'd need. I was just remembering my first pond, which looked like a brighter green spot in the shrub border. Who knew those cute little plants could get so big? As usual, I had to learn the hard way.
Granddad, 2 feet deep is plenty. What is going to restrict your choices is the surface area: a dwarf will cover 2-5 ft across, a full size lily will cover 6-10 ft across.

Grandad that is huge compaired to mine! Will have to compair notes later on when we get some wildlife in our ponds to see if bigger is better or not!! ha ha
Tug (Do you mind me calling you Tug?). You know how I feel then! decisions, decisions. At least when you make the decision and plant, you remember more about the good and bad decisions you've made. When I read things in a book I tend to forget what I've read as I physically haven't done what it said..... Does that make sense??

I have been researching Lilys as I want one myself. How long is your pond Grandad?. Mine as you know is a tin bath. I've narrowered it down to 3 nymphaea pygmaea Helvola; theres also a lily Aurora and the last one Pygmeae Rubra. All are suitable for a small pond. Hope this helps
