Sorry guys, the tryffids again.
I sent a photo and was discussing my malope triffydia with my knowledgeable cousin and she sent me the message below.
" You must be delighted with them – I’m very impressed. Just looked it up in my gardening book, which tells me that they’ll seed over for next year. "
"Seed over for next year ". I don't understand, and don't really want to ask her to explain. Could you guys please tell me EXACTLY what I must do with them when they die off ? Thanks. Bphoto below.

Ha ha, it is upside down, but it doesn't matter, you've posted it before anyway. Malope trifida is a hardy annual, so if it drops seed, it's quite likely that the seed will germinate and grow where it fell, and that's what she means when she says they'll 'seed over' - the trick is to recognise that's what they are next year before you hoe them out, if you want them.

Are they hollyhocks? They will self-seed where they are but you may end up with rather a forest!. After flowering and whilst the seedheads are still green I would remove most of the stalks. Leave a few until the seedheads have gone brown and started to open. Then collect the seed and sow in pots as you usually do.
Hollyhocks are short lived plants so may not come back again next year. Cut the stems down to the ground and just leave them.
Can you delete one of your wn comments. Bamboo and I posted at the same time so I tried to remove my own comment but failed!!

I don't think you can delete, all you can do is edit for a while after its posted

Thanks for the info, sorry it was upside down - I thought I'd cured that problem. Must concentrate next time.

Actually it's the right way up on my ipad, I wonder if it's the right way for anyone else ?

It will be the right way up on your iPad but not on anything else. I pull upside down images onto my desktop and open them from there then they are the right way up!

If you're going to upload images from your Ipad, why not upload them upside down so it displays right side up? Does this make sense?

Thanks B., still thinking about that one !

That's certainly a change from the old hedge - and the screen block wall looks so much better with the flowers spilling over.
Still got the monkey puzzle tree!

I find that as long as I take the pic on my iPad in landscape and with the home button on the right-hand side, it usually uploads the right way round.

Thanks M, I'll look into that.

That's why I love this site Melchisedec. We can all collaborate ideas and solve problems. Great tip!

I hope it works for others! I experimented last year, photographing and uploading a set of notes saying which way I'd used the iPad and then checking on my laptop.

I use PhotoShop for everything, but that's not a cheap program.

Indeed it isn't!

This discussion has come round again! We have had the definitive answer - which Hank was partly responsible for finding...
1. Use the iPad with the camera lens at the top. The camera lens is in the corner near to the volume switch. For landscape pics this will put the home button under your right thumb (volume switch on top), for portrait pics the home button will be at the bottom (volume switch on the right).
2. To make the images of an acceptable size to GoY, use one of the FREE photo resizing apps such as Minima (I can recommend this as one of the quickest and easiest to do a basic resize)
Of course PC users wouldn't have these problems if they switched to Macs! ?

I would - my tablet's Android...

Sorry Urbanite I have a Macbook and Hanks's photos are upside down on that too... So it isn't a PC Mac problem.

I don't have any problems with my 9 year old MacBookPro.
5 Aug, 2015
Well I do with my less than a year old Macbook and the one I had prior to that.

Thanks for all the replies, I now remember exactly how to send photos properly. I just hope I still remember next time I try to include one !

Oh good, Hank, write it down! My techy son tells me these problems with Ipad and upside down photos are to do with the user of the Ipad, not the system its sending to - he says there is a way of sending them to ensure they're the right way up, but not everyone knows how to do it, or hasn't worked it out. I've no idea myself, don't have an Ipad or Iphone...

It just has to do with the way the photos are taken in the first place. If the orientation of the iPad is correct, as in Urbanite's explanation, there should be no problem.

It would help, Hank, if the picture was up the right way.
