Having flowered profusely for years, my Paeony Sarah Bernhardt has only one flower bud this year. Has anyone any suggestions as to why this might be?

Peonies do better after a cold winter, they need a certain length of coldness to initiate flowering, so likely it's the weird weather we've had over winter and spring that's caused the problem.

Thank you, Bamboo. I did wonder if the weather had something to do with it. It's certainly been unusual, and our winter wasn't very cold.

No one's winter was cold - it was colder here in London in March and early April than it had been all winter!

My tree peony didn't produce a single bud this year, was this due to the mild winter also?

They're not quite so fussy but even trees paeonies won't flower anywhere zone 10 upwards. UK is mostly zone 8, and herbaceous paeonies won't do well zone 9 and above, so it's possible there been some effect on your tree paeony, feverfew, specially if you're in a warmer region of the UK.

Thanks Bb. I guess Surrey is a warm part of UK.
