I planted about 12 agapanthus plants in gardens in London and Norfolk last autumn -- all planted in full sun. Only one has flowered this year. What should I do for a better performance next year?

Thank you everyone. Yes I do have a sense of humour but went off on holiday just after I posted the question. Glad I provided the excuse for some merriment

Be patient - they're notorious for being shy to flower. They might also have had set-backs with last winter's cold. One of my mature plants hasn't flowered this year!

I have had a huge pot full of them for years now and this year only have three flowers! But I think that the slugs have been at them, maybe when it was cold and damp back in May time, little b's, gonna be on the war path next spring!! I didnt think slugs ate these but !!! :0(

Snails hide in amongst the leaves, Grandmage - I found about 25 of them in one plant last summer and disposed of them!

I found loads in the hosta pot and am still finding them but didnt think they would be in agap. pot !!! Were's a toad when you need one?

It was quite funny, really - I picked them off and put them in a trug, turned my back for a few minutes only to find them all crawling (slithering?) out of the trug in a long line straight back to my Agapanthus! Needless to say, they all got collected up and went for a swim in the stream. ;-))

If only I had a stream !!!!!!!!!

My husband was telling me of a programme where a scientist was studying snails and they have a homing ability. So every time I throw a snail over the hedge into the road, unless it gets run over it heads straight back home again!! Maybe slugs do the same.

Thats all we need Camm, and yes Spritz with a huge bucket of mine !!

18 Aug, 2010

Yes, Camm - I read that somewhere, too - that's why I stopped throwing them over the hedge into the farm field. Swimming? I can't see them making their way back, can you? <evil laugh>

Come on then, Grandmage - you're welcome to 'borrow' the stream!
