My neighbour dug up a pink Japanese anemone for me yesterday, it was in flower, I planted it straight away but it has wilted badly, will this survive or shall I just buy a new one !

I think your pink anemone is all done. It will never be able to store up enough energy for next year. Here's an excuse to run to the garden center to buy new ones.

thinking about it put it into a pot and cosset it, you may be lucky and get it to come through. if he offers you more ask for a good amount of soil with it.

Thankyou for your answers, I'll try cutting it short and plenty of water, fingers crossed.

If its the ordinary one rather than one of the modern varieties you could be glad if it dies actually as they can be extremely invasive. If it does die and you want a replacement go for one of the named varieties that are easier to keep in check.

Japanese anemones don't enjoy being moved. It may sulk for a year but be better the year after.

I had no idea - thanks for that, Andrew. Maybe A. Wild Swan isn't a Japanese anemone . . . I dug one out and potted it up to move house, and it is already flowering again.

not the best time of year really. but cut most of the foliage off to about 6 inches from the soil and keep watering. new leaves may develop in which case success. if it doesn't ask the neighbour for some in the early spring just as new leaves are unfurling. they have brittle roots so will lots of water to encourage it to take.
