Can anyone identify this tree? I found it growing near a mountain area in Bulgaria. I planted two saplings two years ago. they are growing in my garden in Bulgaria.

As you gathered it as a sapling it could be a Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa). Only a guess though. If it is, not the sort of thing you would want in your garden, unless you have a substantial estate.

Thanks very much for replies, yes I am a bit concerned it could grow like a bean stalk! I will try to find pics online and compare.

You are right Jimmytheone it is a sweet Chestnut, well two of them! They grow to 35 metres and two metres in diameter so cant stay where they are, I could put one in the middle of the lawn if my husband will let me, it's his lawn! I could put the other in the fields outside and hope the sheep don't eat it. I am really disappointed as they are so healthy and happy where they are, I will wait until the Autumn and decide then. Thank you again, and you too Steragram.

Glad you have it identified.
Jimmy how did you tell the difference from this photo please?

Only a guess but the Sweet Chestnut leaves seem to have a more distinct serration than a Walnut.

Hi Ladyessex thanks for the picture, wow yes they grow awfully big don't they? Anyway I have put two pics on my site of the only area that might squeeze one in. I have a very old Apricot on the left of the pic and the huge old Cherry on the right which would be long gone by the time the Chestnut is fully grown (as unfortunately will I ) Even so it would dwarf the space so I don't know. Something to think about. Thanks all.
