What to do with unsightly daffodil greens once they’ve finished flowering. I usually let them die down for 6 weeks but what happens is that the grass gets slimy with the rotting greens. It then never recovers and am left with yellow patches under the trees. Self seeding rarely works as by then the leaves have created a shade canopy. I know not to tie them or cut them back. Any other suggestions to keep them off the grass but let them die down? Thanks.

There is really nothing you can do because when the daffs naturally die down they build up the bulbs for next year, if you take the leaves off they cannot do this

Could you restrain the outer ones with a long thread, perhaps secured to the tree trunk? You might try using a cane in the centre of the smaller bed for the same purpose?
Doesn't scooping them up and trying to lean them over the other way work? Some are already leaning inwards.

I was going to say use canes and twine to hold them more upright to stop them flopping onto the grass.

I think I would try to tie them up too,if possible,as Yorklass suggests. Maybe some smallish canes ,at intervals, and double thickness of garden twine or similar ,tied to each clump, might help, till they die down naturally..It won't be the most attractive sight, but at least it won't be for long..

That’s a great idea. I have enough bamboo canes so I will make up a contraption as I go along. Thanks guys.

PS - a bit sad to blame them for being unsightly though - think of them as a reminder of past glories. None of us look too good in our later years...

More bothered about grass rotting underneath. Don’t mind the spent daffodils as such, it’s just they choke the grass underneath. That’s all.

Ha Ha,Eileen,I'm more of a soft Brie,.with a brain to match !

Some foodies prefer their cheese ripe anyway. But agree nobody likes to see their grass go brown and mushy...

Hmm...I wonder how those Daffodil meadows and lawns we occasionally see work, then?

Yes I wonder about that as well. Good point.
