growing campanula

mid glamorgan, United Kingdom

Hi everyone! I want to grow campanula as Ive seen it on walls like a blanket and it looks lovely. i have a dry stone wall in the garden but i cant grow it from the top of the wall as theres no soil. If I plant it at the bottom will it grow up the wall. thx

Basically no, it will grow downwards. To get it started in the top of your wall, wrapped some small rooted pieces in clay soil, warp that in moss and squeeze into spaces between the stones. Keep the baby plants damp until they spread their roots. They actually do not need that much soil as long as they can get their roots down into the damp cracks and crevices of the wall.

I think that what Cookygirl has seen is Campanula poscharskyana (say that without your teeth in). It is a vigourous purple flowered plant that will push itself a couple of feet up the wall, if your lucky. It does not require any special treatment.
