nice to see proof that there are other moss lovers out there! would have to be Irish! I think they are the most amazing things...there is a wild moss that grows on the acid thin soil that's over pink granite on the Canadian Shield... it is like a mattress it is so thick...under the white pines it makes a carpet that is ankle deep, soft and plush. when we were kids, we would try to loll around on it...and we'd always get wet...it was a very effective sponge!

that sounds lovely Lori, like a deep carpet

a favourite of the black bears, they would look for the outside edges of the patch where it was dry enough that ants would colonize...at the beginning of summer momma bears would bring their cubs for a Teddy Bear's Picnic...they would eat the wild blueberries and turn the moss looking for ants and bugs!! a veritable banquet! When ever we went up to the rocks to pick blueberries my Dad always went up the trail first to make sure that bruin and her bunch weren't around!

did you ever come into close contact with them Lori ?

Not once that I remember on the berry rocks...but the bears soon learned about the municipal dumpster...They became habituated to garbage and we once went to watch the bears... Here again, a sow with cubs, had stashed her cubs up a tree while she scouted out the dumpster...she wasn't happy when my dad shined a spotlight on her... she scuttled out of the dumpster and bellowed to the cubs....who backed halfway down the tree and fell the rest of the way in their hurry.... Everyone thought it was hilarious but the bears...I didn't like it... it bothered me that they depended on garbage for their food and the young weren't being taught to forage. The municipality had to hire animal control officers...some bears were relocated farther north and some were shot...not a happy ending, I'm afraid, Irish and Amy.

Nothing as exciting as watching moss grow.
Very nice picture.Your use of lighting is always great.
As for Lori's story ... all too common in WA. State.

Irish,
I too, have a bear story. Actually a few. this one involves a mother bear tossing apples down to her cub below. That is one thing. What people do not know about bears is that they talk.
Yes, they talk. All the time she was tossing the apples down to her child, he/she was gobbling away and they- they talked. I was not smoking anything! But this was communication in a form I had never witnessed ever before amongst animals. I am not talking about woofs or snorts, I am talking about sentances and paragraphs that involved emotion.
I do get upset about their killings, their stuffing, mounting and disrespectful display of their bodies. It really bothers me. Bears are very special creatures, so are racoons. I suspect if we monkeys ever exterminate ourselves, the next replacement might come from these two specie.
