Thevetia thevetioides - Giant Thevetia

I really like this tree!

It can grow much larger.

Does it grow there? It's a tropical tree native to southern Mexico. It's related to plumeria...and is about as hardy as a plumeria tree. It also has very sweetly fragrant flowers.

You may get too much rain for it to do well, in winter. It's like plumeria, it wants very dry conditions in winter.

From what I've seen on the rain average for your area...you receive three times the amount of rainfall than us here in San Diego.

So far...no rain. This summer is lasting for ever!!!

It's a beautiful tree though.

If you ever see one, it grows pretty easily from cuttings (in summer). It's not a very hardy tree...maybe it'll take freezing for a very short duration (possible an hour). I've never seen one in the San Francisco Bay Area...I think because it's too cool and wet in winter. I've seen Thevetia peruviana, though.

Thevetia peruviana is very widely grown here in San Diego, also...especially in dry areas along the freeways.

You know.....I never really "looked" at trees before GOY. Probably because they are not as beautiful as the ones that grow in CA. Always busy doing this or that and not enough time to look up. Just discovering that there are a lot of beautiful trees on Corfu, they are just not placed right!

I'm sure the trees are just as beautiful there as here. I just think, according to what you say, there's a lot more available here. This is due to many collectors in many areas of horticulture and many plant socieities. Also, the areas which have the biggest selections are in very wealthy communities. We have a lot of multi-millionaires and billionaires here in California. California has always been on the cutting-edge for many things, plants included.

We have the same problems here with plants and trees being planted in the wrong spot. Even at the San Diego Zoo I see sun-loving plants in shade and vise-versa...and there's many certified horticulturist working there.

I have this tree in La Mesa, CA and i LOVE it! It does great with heat and full sun. I have fast-draining soil too.

La Mesa has the perfect climate for this tree.

your Giant Thevetia is really beautiful. I have one growing in the neighborhood and wanted to know if you have any experience propagating it either by seed or cutting. I have a couple of fresh pods and was hoping for some help.
I live in Venice and the climate seems to be very suitable for this tree.

Also, i saw that you belong or belonged to the palm society - do you know John Reese, a family friend?

I don’t have this tree, but hear it’s relatively easy from seed and a little more difficult from cuttings. You want to keep the cuttings moist and not soggy. Also, the cuttings would need a lot of heat to root. You probably want to use a heating mat. Do you live in Venice, CA or Venice, Italy?
