Cicada on echinacea leaves

Skippy- I've never seen these in this area before, or ever in person for that matter. I'm not sure about the sound they make...if I've heard it or not??? The males are supposed to make a loud sound though. I brought this one to school to show the kids, along with some snails that were about to be...dead :)

When we were in Australia visiting my bro. We heard Cicadas. Boy did we hear them, you can't fail to hear them. Starts far away, is it a helicopter? No, doesn't sound quite right, but its getting closer and louder and louder and louder. Then its here. You're almost shouting to be heard. It quietens slightly as the wall of sound recedes. It fades. Its gone. Your ears are ringing with the sound of the silence. Brilliant! Incredable!
That was my first encounter with these critters. Never saw a live one only the husk of a moult. After a couple of days of this you lose the impact of that first time and almost tune them out. Almost.
