Pearl Bush

Wow Mrcushy, how have you managed to keep this so compact.. Mine is very straggly. Do you prune it hard to keep it like that?

Is this Exhorta the same as ours in Canada called commonly "The Bride"?or is it Pearl bush??
Mine died this year from cold conditions, luckily a friend got another 4 me yesterday. Really compact.

Thanks. Milky - After flowering it always seems to put on a huge spurt of growth which I always prune out after the flowers have gone over (mid May time), this seems to give it a much more compact shape without losing any of the flowers the following year.

Doon - I think this is also called the Bride, I'm not sure now?! I get so confused by all the different names some plants seem to have and I may well have misnamed this one.
Fortunately even our coldest winters probably don't come even close to a Canadian winter!

We live on the West coast of Canada, on a lovely little island. Our temp. R very mild, and we can go 4 a zone 8, by pushing it. This year was exceptionally cold, apparently (we were in Arizona) & they had temp. -9C for about 4 days. That caused damage to a lot of us who push the zone temp.
I think of Climates R fairly similar specially where we live. I had my Exhorta in a pot & think that caused the problem.

Yes it does sound similar climate to us. I have family in Toronto and was imagining how cold it could get! We got down to about -8C for a few days which for here is pretty cold (these days anyways) but the plant came through fine, unlike my Eucalyptus which seems to have given up altogether.

I know about Eucalyptus, I have lost 3 now in different years & stages of growth, now I will resign myself to see them when I visit South Africa etc. Just can not protect them enough. had a huge one, but finely it also gave up the ghost. Bought another Exhorta today $42. it chased out of my pocket, but it went into the ground & not a pot this time.

Hi, I live in the UK & I have just joined this forum. I would like to say that 'The Bride' pictures are really stunning. I went to a garden centre a few weeks back & I am now the proud owner of Exochorda X Macrantha 'The Bride'. It was in flower & I was so taken aback with its unusually arching stems & stunning display of flowers. The guy at the garden centre said it had been out all winter with just some frost fleece wrapped around the pot. So considering how long & harsh our winter went on for last & this year (not a patch on Canada though)
I guess I am fortunate to be the proud owner of 'The Bride', I only hope that I can do this plant justice & will one day send in a photo, it is still in flower now with a few new buds. Happy gardening all. Laikaspirit

Mine is in full flower at the moment and is the first thing I see when I open the curtains in the morning, it's a truly lovely plant.
