Alpine garden

I created this bed for a client who didn’t want a raised bed and wanted something nice to look at from the terrace area.
For those who know me and remember me – I haven’t been on here for a while – my planting theme is usually semi tropical and I push hardiness to its limits!

Needless to say I haven’t worked much with alpines so I needed to research this and this is what I came up with..

I hope you like it, please let me know your thoughts

Before

After

I have put some Tulipa humillis Magenta Rose along the central ‘path’ of the bed and a mixture of crocus Ancyrensis Deep yellow and Iris Reticulata Purple gem along the bottom.
There are so many beautiful alpines, I just didn’t realize – and tenacious little plants they are!!

Penstemon Newberryi

Antirrhinum pulverulentum – alpine snap dragon

Scutellaria Texas Rose

I also used several varieties of sedum – stonecrop, sempervivum, alpine scabious, thymus bressingham pink, saxifrage and dwarf hebe.
To compliment the planting I used 4 different types of gravel to break up the area including small pebbles and Isle of Wight stone.
I am really pleased with it and it will stay interesting all year round – I hope my clients like it, they are away at the moment and haven’t seen it finished.

oh wow, looks really great, my friend has loads of alpines she loves them, i can see why. I live in north east scotland, elgin, and they do very well, so have to be hardy. You have done a really lovely job, bet was hard work. Love the different stone and gravel gives a great texture.

Thats looking fab, I've never built an alpine garden either, but my hubby would love one! I do like the little alpine pouring out of the tipped over pot, very cute, I'm sure your clients will love it!
