Afraid to prune my Camelia

Hello, I have a huge Camelia (7′ × 10′ cirumference) in my small garden which dominates the whole of one corner. I would like to prune it but each year it gets bigger and I chicken out, but this year it has to be done. Today armed with saw and secutuers I was about to start chopping bits off, but was put off by the amount of dead wood in the centre. If I cut back drastically (which is what it needs) will I end up with a dead plant. Should I just go for it or get in the professionals?

Thank you Andrewr, You are most probably right about the centre not getting any light as it is a very dense. I will try and pluck up courage and have a go. Half and half is a good idea too. I'll do the half that is in my neighbours garden.

Camellias usually respond pretty well to being cut back. The dead wood in the centre is probably because it has not received any light. Give it a good feed after surgery and make sure it doesn't dry out if we have a hot, dry summer.
If you are really worried, do half this year and the rest next year.
