Planted my dahlia tubers in 5 inch pots today ready for planting in about a week i plant the pots straight in the ground as it keeps the tubers nice and tight and its easy to lift them from the ground and to store in the winter, also put some rudbeckia seeds in the propagator……..

OOOH! Thanks for reminding me, Adam. I've been meaning to plant my dahlias and forgot all about them! That will be job 1 for tomorrow. :-)

Yes, I might do that. What sized pots do you put into the ground? 5" pots sound a bit small for the large Dahlias I've got.

I left my Dahlias in the ground this year but the very cold winter has killed them all off I think . I'll have to get more.

I forgot to lift mine last year so I have bought a packet of seed. I hope to have sown them early enough for them to flower this year. What do you think, do I have a chance?

I have some in 10'' pots that i place in areas where there are gaps Half buried or not even buried, between foliage of crocosmias. I also do this with lilies too. some spares to fill gaps. many are permanently in the ground. Use a big a pot as poss then you wont have to worry too much about watering them. come the autumn i take the pots into the greenhouse and overwinter them until about know. fresh compost and off we go again. yippee!

if planted deep enough they may survive and put up shoots april/may. good luck. seeds may produce flowers this year depending on the growing conditions Xela.

This year I intend to try out companion gardening in the veg patch ( in the hopes of having more success) with such things as perennial herbs . I hadn't thought of doing it with the dahlias but I like the idea, many thanks for the suggestion, Seaburngirl, and a belated welcome to GoY.
