The St Jude’s Day storm has caused chaos around Sutton with a falling trees smashing cars and blocking roads and trains not running.

One of the most serious incidents is in Turnpike Lane, Sutton, where a tree fell and crushed a car, damaging three others in the process.

Police and Sutton Council workers were called to Sandy Lane South at 4.19am after a tree fell and brought down a telephone cable.

In Ewell Road police helped clear a tree from the road onto the pavement. Both Beddington Lane and Greyhound Road, opposite Sutton Grammar School, have been blocked by falling trees.
Council workers are believed to be “overwhelmed” the number of trees that have fallen down in the gale-force winds and have been called to at least 30 incidents.

Duty Inspector Peter Stewart-Maunder, of Sutton police station, said: “It’s been a busy night and the officers have worked hard to keep on top of incidents and keep the public safe.”

Firefighters were called to Asda in Beddington Lane where a shelter in the car park had become dislodged and to Clifton Road where a tree had blown over. A spokesman for Wallington fire station said: "At Asda there were about 10 people having to hold up this shelter that had broken off and had gone over the road. We just had to help them break it up.

“I think the local authority [Sutton Council] is pretty overwhelmed by it all. In Clifton Road we made it safe but we have to wait for them to move it and I think they’ve got a lot of jobs to work through.”

A council spokesperson said: “We’ve had 30 callouts this morning for a variety of incidents ranging from broken branches to fallen trees. Two teams have been sent out across the borough to deal with these incidents and to ensure priority cases are dealt with first.

“If anyone is aware of issues caused by the overnight storm, then we’d urge them to contact the council on 020 8770 5000 to report them. As ever, the safety of residents and road users is our main concern and we will do everything to make sure the borough is cleared of any damage caused.”

Public transport has been affected with all overground rail services being cancelled until further notice.
