went to london with my sister, and our partners last year, and in the courtyard of the V&A saw these awesome plants,asked an attendant what they were,and was told they were echium pininana.
obtained some seeds from website secretseeds,and am attempting to grow them,they are biennial or triennial in the UK.and the flower spikes are over SIX ft tall!!!!!

went to a plant fair today at culland hall in derbyshire,I have actually bought an echium,and am going to put it in large pot, and greenhouse over winter.also bought another tree lupin,but the greenflies will think i,ve
provided them with meals on wheels.my impatien balfourii seeds are beginning to germinate,do you thinjk i should put them in pots and let them self seed in the pots for next year?

I see you are in north Leicester, you will need to protect your echiums over the winter and with all the wet weather they have a tendancy to rot north of London! I have bought several mature plants and have even grown some from seed, but in 'sunny' Notts they have either rotted or refused to grow. If you do have success, they will self seed with gusto, not for the feint hearted! LOL
