60 Frogs, 5 Goldfish and 1 Newt.

In March I decided to give myself a birthday present in the form of a garden designer who I wanted to put onto paper in a cohesive manner all of my garden design thoughts and wishes!
This was the best present I have ever had and if I ever move again will definately invest in a garden designer, but back to the story…..
One of the biggest features in my new garden is a pond, 4 mtrs x 3 mtrs which replaces the old preformed pool that I inherited when I moved in 2 years ago and so I soon set about getting it installed (with the help of a local builder). After 2 weeks of letting the water"settle in" I allocated this weekend with the help of my parents to emptying my old pool and transfering my 5 goldfish and the few frogs that I had seen around into their new luxurious pond. This has taken most of the morning but to my delight (frogs are so beneficial to the garden) and horror (frogs frighten me!) we ended up removing 60 frogs along with the goldfish and a newt, I just cant get over how many frogs lived in such a small space, is this normal??

I'm sure they will all like their new, spacious accommodation. That was a lot of frogs, whether it is 'normal' I don't know, given it is spawning time it could be. Have no experience of frogs, even when I had a pond they never visited!!

i have loads in my pond too can't believe how much frogspawn i have this year, the fish are eating it though :( so don't think i'll get many tadpoles.
Garden ponds are very important especially as their natural habitat is fast disappearing thats probably why you have so many, nowhere else to go!! and they go back to the pond they were spawned in so look out next year LOL!!

Glad you have a nice sizeable pond now ! When we moved in here two years ago someone had sunk an old icecream tub into the ground, and a small preformed pond next to it.Found about twelve frogs in pond and three in tub !

Since then have built large pond and surrounded it with stones from old crumbling wall ! Now have numerous frogs, toads and a pair of nesting ducks !

Good luck with yours !

I had already moved the frogspawn last week as i didnt want to have to resuce hundreds of tiny tadpoles, most of them have already hatched so i guess i will be at least doubling my frog population next year!! Another thing I have 60 frogs in a crystal clear pond that has pebbles on the bottom and cannot see 1, they hide so well.

Thanks....she successfully hatched 12 ducklings last year.
Lost the pics but will have camera at the ready in about 2 weeks when guess they are due ! Ponds are such a wonderful magnet to a garden...find all sorts of creatures dropping by for a bathe and drink ! Enjoy yours ! : )

I like your pond. The water looks so clear. What are those planks of wood for ?

I love the shallows in your new pond, it is looking good.
I think the planks are temporary, Hywel, to stand on while planting deep water aquatics. So much easier than trying to do it from the bank.

Of course ! - Silly me :o)

The planks are new sleepers and are a bridge over the pond, I think when the edge is finished and the planting is done it will blend in better... will post some more pics later in the year.
You are right about it being easier to plant though Xela : )

How wonderful you have all those residents in your pond. Your pond must be very healthy for the frogs to love it so much. They are so sensitive to water conditions.
I love your new pond. It looks great.
