caterpillar problems and earwigs

Hello anyone, advice needed. I moved to a very large gardenm my passion is roses and clematis. Since moving here I have encountered problems with both. Mainly the beautiful petals of clematis with huge holes in them and a shredded look and now some of the roses leaves have been stripped by a tiny green caterpillar, hard to see sometimes making the whole plants look skeletal. What advice does anyone have for dealing with this and when is the best time. I have tried the grapefruit idea for the earwigs at the bottom of the plant. didnt work Im afraid.
any advice gratefully received. thanks
