should think very carefully before planting any type of tree.

Conifers can be bought cheaply, the schools were flogging them for £3 in ’ Plant a Tree’ Year. (Which was the daftest thing Percy Thrower ever did.) The result has been 40 foot high FIRE HAZARDS. Dry as a bone in the middle the slightest spark sets them off. It happened to me. If the wind is blowing the wrong way the flames can set fire to huts in gardens. The younger employees at
Council Offices know nothing about this. Are very quick to declare the rules are that all trees planted on council house/flat gardens are the responsibility of the Tenant. This is not true, they are the responsibility of the person who planted them. (Which in my case was the Local Authority.)

Therefore, if you live in this type of accommodation its a good idea to trim any trees in the garden to reduce height/width.

The cost of cutting them down and removal in future years is £400 per tree. The Council will try to apply the Landlord and Tenant Act to force the current tenant to pay.

Best stick to manageable shrubs.
