Big Changes in a Small Plot...

Last year I did something different. I decided that if I was to truly get something out of my garden, then I had to be bold. Do something new. Flash a little cash (not that there is ever a great deal of that). But I really want to create a garden to be proud of now, one that my late parents would have smiled upon, keen tillers of the soil that they were.

So I began by digging up loads of turf. Daughter got involved, and something new started to take shape before our very eyes.

Digging out perennial weeds was a tough job, especially in the August heat, and they’re still poking their heads up now, but we managed to clear the soil pretty well and form a stepping stone path to be planted with small bulbs.

The Grand Idea is to fill all this luscious space in the summer with cut-flower annuals, so with this in mind I went to my friend Ben Ranyard at Higgledy Garden and bought in a load of seed. What with these and some bits and bobs from Sarah Raven, my dreams of an idyllic flowery haven next year are set… :)

I hope you'll still be around, and then you'll be able to show us how it looks after the seeds have grown and flowered.

Sturdy little apple!
Yes, I adore tulips, but they are in a raised bed surrounding a plum tree elsewhere. Big hopes for those!
