New Fruit Trees

Not usually one for buying stuff off the TV but today I was drawn to a special offer on Ideal World (gardenbargains).
The offer was £39.99 for 4 self-fertile miniture/patio fruit trees (Braeburn apple, Conference pear, victoria plum and cherry) that also included 4 very large containers to grown them in and a box of Fish Blood and Bone.
I’m so looking forward to getting them home and watching them grow, they said on the TV that although I will get fruit in the first year it’ll take 3-5 years to fully mature. As yet I haven’t decided whether or not to leave them in the containers (and remember to water them!!!) or to plant them in the garden. Will they need full sun or can I plant them in the North East facing part of the garden than gets the sun from early morning until 2pm(ish) – after that the sun disappears round the front of the house??
I can’t wait to enjoy some home grown fruit, hopefully it’ll save me a fortune in the long run :)
I’ll post pics when I get them all potted up!

Well done Donnah.....I saw them and yjeu were a bargain....But we already have several fruit trees....I have used gardenbargains.com myself and have always found their plants to be really healthy and always packed well for dispatch.....

Fab! Thanks for pointing me to that station....well, perhaps not as I will probably end up spending money!! :)). I have an apple tree facing north west which does well enough, and an espalier facing south east which also seems ok. Hope they thrive for you Donna and that you get some pears, as I haven't managed to grow a single one so far!

Pears take notoriously long to 'settle in' and start fruiting (typically ten years), hence the saying "plant pears for your heirs"

I saw this too and it looks great. I was tempted to order but when I went on the website they have taken the bonemeal fertilizer out of the deal

Thanks guys for your comments.
Think what I'll do is get them potted up in the first instance and place them where I'd ideally like to leave them, see how they thrive, then move them to a sunnier spot if I need to.
I've never been a particular plum and cherry fan, but I can always hand them away to friends or make jams!!

The birdies eat all my cherries, but so far they have been pretty sour anyway!

How lovely Donnah hope they do well for you, and you will taste the difference. I have mine around the side of my house north facing and they produce in pots too but they are not minitures.
