Accident with a bamboo cane

My husband had been working all day up a ladder putting a new roof on our conservatory. After our evening meal he went out again intending to put the remaining Perspex panels in position. He was just pushing a panel onto the roof whilst standing on the bottom rung of a low stepladder when his foot slipped and he stumbled backwards into a half barrel containing several dahlia plants and a few supporting bamboo canes. Don’t read any further if you are at all squeamish! One of the canes pierced his forearm on the inside and came out on the top of his forearm. It had gone straight through between the two bones and missed the artery, tendons and nerves. Nevertheless, he spend 3 days in hospital whilst he had his arm washed through to remove any bits of cane and have strong antibiotics fed through a drip.
I am pleased to say that his arm is mending nicely, the roof fixed by our sons, and the dahlias are flowering on the stalks not damaged, and I now have proper tops to all my canes! We have had a serious wakeup call – it could have been a lot worse but that doesn’t bear thinking about.

This week I lost my balance, and fell over backwards while trimming a bush. Next door neighbour climbed over the fence and picked me up. Its so easily done even when wearing boots. Take care everyone.

Oh dear ! ... I'm glad to hear he's all right now. Things can happen so easily. Sometimes I think we need to be more aware of the dangers in our gardens.

Reading this has inspired me to put tops on all my canes later! Glad your husband is ok. Diane likewise I hope you are ok after your fall, so easily done as you say. Good that you have nice neighbours!

It made me cringe reading this and my forearms came out in sympathy! It was lucky (?) that it didn't cause more serious damage, but glad your OH, dahlias and roof came out alright in the end.

It's hard when we learn a lesson in the garden the hard way but its good to pass it on to make us all aware of the dangers . Best wishes to your hubby .

Many thanks everyone for your kind thoughts and best wishes, to my husband. He is very cross with himself for breaking his most important safety rule - never carry on working when you are tired! Time will tell if he has really accepted that he has to pace himself now he is 70!
I'm glad Diane got prompt attention and her neighbour didn't injure himself climbing to her aid.
Take care everyone and don't overdo it!
